Frequently Asked Questions

Adoption & Foster Process

1

How do I apply to adopt or foster?

You can submit an application through our website. Every application is reviewed by a real volunteer, so please bear with us during this time of influx as processing may take longer than usual.

How long does the process take?

Processing times vary based on volume. During high‑visibility periods, it may take longer than usual. We review applications in the order they are received.

How do you match axolotls to adopters?

We match based on the axolotl’s needs, your experience, your setup, and your availability. Some axolotls require specialized care or experienced homes.

Do you adopt out of state?

We prioritize New England placements to reduce transport stress, but we do adopt out axolotls that are healthy enough to travel to individuals and families from any US state where axolotl ownership is legal.

Surrendering an Axolotl

2

How do I surrender an axolotl?

Submit a surrender request through our website. Our Intake Coordinator will follow up with next steps.

Is there a fee?

We charge a $100 surrender fee for most intakes to help cover the cost of their housing, medications, food, and any future vet visits they may need. In some cases this fee may be waived; this is at the discretion of the Board of Directors and subject to Board approval.

What happens after I submit a surrender form?

Our Intake Coordinator will contact you to discuss the axolotl’s condition, setup, and timeline. Please check your spam folder for replies.

Processing Times & Communication

3

Why haven’t I heard back yet?

We are a small, all‑volunteer team. During high‑volume periods, replies may take longer. We respond to every application, so please check your spam folder!

Why are your emails going to spam?

We’re seeing a high rate of email providers filtering rescue‑related messages. Adding our email to your contacts helps ensure you receive updates.

Do you ever deny applications?

Yes. If we cannot confirm appropriate setup, experience, or fit for the axolotl’s needs. We always explain why and offer guidance.

Husbandry & Care Questions

4

Do you offer care guidance?

Yes. We provide evidence‑based husbandry support for axolotls. You can access our free Axolotl Care Guide here on our website, and visit the LLA Lessons Learned blog, where we discuss a wide range of axolotl care and husbandry-related questions.

Do you offer emergency medical advice?

We cannot provide veterinary advice, but we can help you identify when a vet visit is needed.

What water testing method do you recommend?

We use and recommend the API Master Test Kit for accurate readings. The test strips commonly available are inaccurate and can put your axolotl’s health at risk.

Donations & Support

5

How can I support the rescue?

Donations, fostering, and sharing our educational content all help. You can learn more about how to donate on our Support page!

Are donations tax‑deductible?

Yes. Libertyland Axolotl Rescue is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and all donations are tax‑deductible to the extent allowed by law. After donating, you will receive a confirmation email or receipt that you can use for your records.
