How to Properly introduce a New Axolotl to a Tank with Existing Axolotls
Today we are going to discuss proper practices for introducing a new axolotl to already owned and established axolotls. Prior to our discussion we wanted to mention that opposite gender axolotls cannot be housed together. Axolotls can have friends of the same gender, and within 1-2 inches of size.
You will also want to double check your tank is suitable to accommodate an additional axolotl. For sizing, it is a 20 gallon long tank per one adult axolotl, and an additional 10-20 gallons for each additional axolotl. Next, you’ll want to ensure you have adequate filtration; you want 2x the recommended filter gallon size (i.e for a 20 gallon tank you would need at least 40 gallons of filtration).
So, let’s get started!
The very first step in this process is quarantine! A 30 day minimum quarantine period is recommended. During this time, you will tub the axolotl with 100% daily primed water changes. This is a wonderful time to get to know them, their eating habits and preferences, as well as gain insight into general health. This is also an excellent time to deworm your axolotl. If you have further questions about deworming, please view our blog on deworming here.
Why is quarantine so important?
There are several reasons quarantine is beneficial for both you and your new axolotl. For starters, this tubbing period allows the axolotl to acclimate to your specific water parameters prior to being introduced to the tank that will have increased nitrates in addition to your source parameters. As discussed prior, this is a great time to deworm and ensure the axolotl is parasite free before meeting anyone new. If the axolotl came with an illness (visibly present or underlying), this tub time will be beneficial for isolating the infection and for treatment. Axolotls may be fussy eaters following a move, this time provides an adjustment period while they are striking, and allows you to better understand their eating habits and favorite foods prior to being introduced to the tank.
What follows the quarantine process?
If you are especially nervous, a divider can be installed temporarily while they begin to understand they aren’t alone in the tank. If you don’t wish to use a divider, that is fine as well! After the quarantine period, give them a feeding (as well as any axolotls in the tank), you can remove the axolotl from the tub, and add them to the tank. (Feeding prior helps ensure no nips).
“Pro tip: it helps to lower them close to the substrate, this minimizes the initial panic of being in a new place.”
It is important to note that although axolotls generally get along well with friends, it is not a guarantee that they will cohabitate well with another axolotl. In this scenario it is in both of their best interests to separate
